Welcome to the University of KwaZulu-Natal Language Planning and Development Office (ULPDO). The Office was established in 2013 as a strategic arm of the University Language Board (ULB) and is one of the three departments in the Division of Teaching and Learning.
ULPDO works in with the four Colleges and professional services. Externally, the Office works with both statutory and voluntary local and international language institutions or consortiums e.g. Pan South African Language Board (Pan-SALB), Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET), Department of Basic Education (DBE), European Union: Erasmus+, COPAL, SADiLaR, Government departments, municipalities, media and institutions of higher learning.
The primary focus is to scientifically develop the isiZulu language and other indigenous languages including the South African Sign Language to be the languages of administration, teaching and learning, research, trade, and technology. The flagship programs of the Office include Corpus Development, Human Language Technologies, literature development, terminology, research and development, academic language interventions, etc.
