Human Language Technologies

Human Language Technologies are vital in the development of a language. They provide key affordances for the language to be developed and be digitally inclined. The ULPDO has invested a lot of resources in this and it continues to learn from the local and international best practices. The intention is to develop world class tools to process metadata on any African language. The following technologies have been developed so far:

Zululex is a powerful mobile app designed to support isiZulu language translation and research. It focuses on academic translation and terminology development across various disciplines, including Law, Science, Humanities, and Health Sciences. The isiZulu Termbank is a specialized linguistic resource designed to support terminology development and standardization. It provides a structured database of verified isiZulu terms, ensuring consistency and accuracy for researchers, translators, and language practitioners

Zululex is a comprehensive linguistic tool designed to support isiZulu language research and translation across various disciplines, including science, humanities, engineering, health science, and law. It provides structured access to a wide range of English and isiZulu terms, making it an essential resource for linguists, educators, and language technology developers.

The isiZulu National Corpus is a large-scale digital collection of isiZulu texts, designed to support linguistic research, language development, and computational applications. It serves as a valuable resource for researchers, educators, and language practitioners seeking authentic isiZulu language data

The spellchecker is a useful resource in language editing. Using the isiZulu national corpus as a basis for training the spellchecker, this tool will complement the university effort on teaching the isiZulu modules and assist book and newspaper editors in editing their texts written in isiZulu. The spellchecker boasts a 90% recognition rate.

Installation
1. Extract the downloaded .zip file
2. Save the folder containing the application in a location of your choice. e.g in your C: drive
3. Double click the Isizulu_Spellchecker.jar to run the application there is no installation necessary.
4. Create a shortcut of the jar file and save the shortcut at an easily accessible location like desktop or task bar
5. If it does not run, download and install JDK:
